Revs David and Adam get into training for their ‘Mudders’ challenge

On Saturday 1st August, two vicars will be taking on a 10 – 12 mile long obstacle course designed by the Special Forces.  The Revd Adam Reed, Vicar of Emmanuel Church Saltburn (near Middlesbrough in the Diocese of York) and the Revd David Chadwick, Vicar of St Paul’s Ryhope (Sunderland in the Diocese of Durham) will be taking part in Tough Mudder Yorkshire, at Broughton Hall Estate, Skipton.

Tough Mudder is an endurance event in which participants attempt a military-style obstacle course, designed and created by British Special Forces to test mental as well as physical strength.  The course has obstacles to strike fear into the heart involving fire, water, electricity and heights, as well as plenty of Yorkshire mud.

Adam said, “My wife Estelle completed Tough Mudder last year, and loved it so much she wanted to take part again this year.  Hearing about her experiences with Tough Mudder reminded me of being a kid watching the Krypton Factor assault course, and wishing I could do it!  The whole event excites me, especially the challenge of all the obstacles. I just hope to be fit enough to get all the way round!  We’ll be part of a team of nine and we’ve agreed that no one gets left behind.

“I hope the thought of a couple of vicars enduring all these exertions will prompt people to sponsor us – I’m raising money for the Saltburn churches youth project, DoorWays. DoorWays works with young people aged 13 to 25 in East Cleveland, offering an open door and non-judgmental approach, and providing practical and emotional support. Many of our young people are living outside of family support, and some are homeless. We are committed to helping young people find a sense of identity, self-worth and increased confidence that will sustain them throughout their life journey.

“Although Tough Mudder feels like a big challenge to me, it’s nothing compared to finding your way in the world as a homeless teenager.  I hope people can give generously to help the work of DoorWays.”

David said, “I’m pretty daunted by Tough Mudder too though I’m up for the challenge! As well as testing myself physically I’m also hoping to raise money for Christian Aid, a charity that’s always been close to my heart. If Christians don’t try and aid those in need sometimes I wonder if they’re really Christians! Like Adam I wonder if I’m fit enough to do it though I’ve made up my mind just to get on with it and have a good time.’
